Why did Instagram remove reels videos?

If you think most of the features look very familiar, it’s no coincidence. Real videos can be considered a direct response to the growing popularity of TikTok, which has grown in popularity over the past 12 months. According to Adweek, TikTok had “the most downloads ever for any app in a quarter” in 2020. And TikTok’s core demographic is rapidly changing.

While once dominated by Gen-Z users, Millennials now make up a larger share of TikTok’s user base than ever before – making the platform even more attractive to advertisers.

So it’s not surprising that Instagram is making moves to replicate TikTok’s most popular features – especially in regions like Brazil where TikTok doesn’t have a strong foothold. In fact, this isn’t the first time Facebook, the parent company of Instagram, has tried to launch a TikTok alternative. Facebook previously launched a short-form standalone app, Lasso, but has yet to come out. However, reels may have a much higher chance of success, thanks to its main positioning on the Instagram app and all the exposure and familiarity that comes with it.

IGTV has found it positioned as series-based content that viewers can tune into each episode with their favorite brands. However, with Micros, it fills the void of high-quality content that is still unofficial but with a shelf life of more than 24 hours.
